What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient science that promotes the wellness of your entire being by bringing balance to all your parts. Health in the body, peace in the mind, happiness in the heart, and liberation within ourselves.
It can be practiced by anyone, anywhere, anytime. The physical asana practices found in most classes are a great place to start, and there is much more to discover as you develop your personal practice.
What props do I need to practice from home?
There are lots of amazing props that add tons of value to a yoga practice. However, to keep my classes as accessible as possible, I will most often just use:
a YOGA MAT,
and TWO YOGA BLOCKS.
Blocks allow exploring so many more poses from a place of safety and mindfulness, whether you are completely new to yoga or a long time practitioner. If you don't have blocks, you can use two full paper towel rolls.
If you want to add to your prop collection, I would also recommend a strap, a bolster, and 2-4 yoga blankets. You can substitute things from around the house for these, like a long belt or sturdy necktie for a strap, and pillows and regular blankets for the bolster and blankets. I will recommend these props when teaching restorative classes, as they really help the body to be in a comfortable place for the poses to reach their full potential.
What should I wear?
Anything you want! Yoga is something you can practice anywhere, at any time. One of my goals is to help others connect to themselves wherever they are in the moment.
At the same time, when taking a yoga class, you may find it helpful to wear comfortable clothing. Pants that are loose or stretchy, and tops that are not too baggy so they won't get in your way. This will make it easier to tune into your body as you begin your yoga journey.
(Though you will sometimes see me in blue jeans, i will often wear form fitting clothes just so that those practicing with me can more easily see alignment cues, and where my body is in space.)
About The Blue Jean Yogi
Angela Moore RYT200, y4c
Hi! I'm Angela, and I have been teaching yoga in Lexington, KY since 2017. I am an RYT200, and y4c certified Oncology yoga instructor. I'm also in the process of becoming a certified aromatherapist.
I believe that yoga is for everyone! You don't need fancy workout clothes. You don't need to be "flexible enough." You don't need anything other than your beautiful human self!
I love holding space for others to connect with themselves in yoga. I believe we all can benefit from a little more connection with ourselves, each other, and our amazing earth!
My goal in every yoga practice, and all of life (because yoga is a life long journey), is to promote connection and balance. Yoga is so much more than the Asana(physical postures) that are most well known in the western world. I try to integrate other yogic principles like the philosophies, pranayama (breathing techniques), and concentration/meditation into the practices. All of these things allow us to move through life with a level of mindfulness that help us grow into the healthiest versions of ourselves.
I would love for you to join me!
